It was at just such a retreat in July 2019 that Judy came to know Ruth, and to interview her and @annabellehickson for Unpaused. It was an intensive 5-day program for the fortunate few, now a distant memory and likely unrepeatable.

Still, it was probably this retreat, and the deep seclusion that Covid enforced, that spawned two different magazine mastheads, Hickson’s @Galah.press and Ribeaucourt’s @Faire.press each so characteristic of their irrepressible founding editors.

The highly skilled artisan ribbon-makers at Julien Faure at St Just St Rambert and Saint-Etienne in France use restored Jacquard looms which are more than 150 years old to weave the ribbons which modern machines cannot hope to reproduce. With an output of just 6 metres of ribbon per day, they supply the haute couture houses of France and Italy with the ribbons that immediately set their creations apart. Instantly recognisable to the connoisseur, their ribbons are woven according to time-honoured traditions and artisanship which ground France's priceless cultural patrimony.

Ruth Ribeaucourt's amazing story of her discovery of her husband's family's role in this industry over the last two centuries is, simply, wonderful.

It turns out that what makes a good strategist also makes a good working mother, if the philosophy and experience of strategic business planning are applied across from the working day to the after hours of caring for a family, a marriage and a home.

That's what I’ve gleaned from interviewing Nicolette Rubinsztein for the Unpaused podcast, having first read Nicolette’s book, Not Guilty.

In Not Guilty, Nicolette applies the McKinsey 7-S In Not Guilty, Nicolette applies the McKinsey 7-S strategic planning framework that guided her as Head of Strategy at Colonial First State for 12 years to raising her family of 3 girls. And while she’s quick to say there’s no silver bullet for resolving the everlasting juggle between work and home,

Nicolette rationalises that it's a mosaic of small things that taken together, make working with a family more likely to succeed. With that in mind, the 7-part framework that she knew so well at the Bank, suddenly made sense as a tool for optimising how home could work better in parallel as well.

Nicolette Rubenzstein is NOT a guilty working mother. And she knows she’s not guilty because she’s actively strategised the way she and her husband will manage their children, their domestic life and both their careers simultaneously. Nicolette has written a book sharing this thinking, Not Guilty, which is grounded in the belief that part time is the best way, and she advocates for that belief throughout. In fact, she was named one of the ten most powerful part time workers in Australia in 2014 by Business Insider. At that time, she listed her working hours as 7am to 1pm, 5 days a week.
